Prep for a New Cat

Get ready for your new kitten

CONGRATULATIONS! SPHYNX IS GOING TO BE A TERRIFIC ADDITION TO YOUR LIFE!

As you are waiting for your kitten, please read through our recommendations to help everyone adapt through introductions.

We always send our kittens to their new home with the food there are accustomed to. Please do no make diet changes for the first 3-4 days and make sure there’s always plenty of water. If you choose to change the brand of catfood, make sure to do so slowly.

Kittens are already litter box trained. Please use the litter they are accustomed to and scoop soiled pieces at least daily. If you choose to switch litter, please do so after giving them some time to adjust to their new home. If you have multi-cat home, we recommend having several litter boxes throughout the household.

Once your kitten is home, everyone will need some time to adjust. Please take precautions when introducing other pets in the house. If you are able to allow a “quarantine” area in your home for kitten to get adjusted to the household dynamics, your kitten would appreciate it while learning new schedule, meeting everyone, noises, etc.

Think of a safe place. This could be a wall-mounted cat cave, a cat tree, a soft bed on one of your shelves. When they are here, they should feel safe. We recommend to never drag them out of this “safe place;” they can be pet here, given treats, but never physically removed.

Scratching posts are another important prep item. They are not just a way for a kitten to enjoy and stimulate themselves, but a way to keep your furniture safe from getting damaged. Use positive reinforcement when they are using their appropriate scratch posts; take them to the scratch post is they try to scratch in an unsuitable place. Also get a couple of toys: don’t go crazy, just a couple of small toys and a wand. Sphynx are great at showing you what they like, so you can always get more once you get to know their personality!

Vet visits are also important. Our kittens are screened for Feline Leukemina Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), undergo fecal parasites exam, and are fully vaccinated. You will have to make regular Vet visits to make sure your Sphynx health is always maintained.
